It’s Not Too Late and You’re Not Too Old

Updated: Nov 6, 2021

I absolutely love that quote! I can’t exactly remember where I first heard it…likely on some social media post or meme…but it has stuck with me for years! Not only do I use it frequently as a reminder for myself, but, also for my patients and clients to tap into as well.

Have you ever said or thought to yourself, “I used to love it when I used to do…” or “I always wanted to…”?

But, have you ever asked yourself the how, when, where, and why you ever stopped doing what you loved to do in the first place? Why you stopped dreaming of achieving or even just having fun?

I’m sure we can sit and put together a long laundry list of reasons, considerations, and, dare I even suggest, excuses of how it came to be, but, the one I hear most often is the “I’m too old for that now” logic.

We get trapped within a definition of “old” which is a personal statement of how we view ourselves. Within health, fitness, and wellness, this concept of “old” seems to give us permission to just accept that certain ailments and conditions are going to happen and are an expected part of adding yet another candle on the birthday cake.

Yes, as we get older certain things can be a bit more challenging to control, but, they are not inevitable. Higher blood sugar leading to diabetes, higher blood cholesterol leading to heart disease and stroke, arthritis, and obesity can and do happen as we age, but, it is not too late and you are not too old to halt, control, or even reverse the progression of these, amongst many other health issues.

One of the biggest lifestyle changes you can benefit from is exercise, or being physically active in some way. If you are currently inactive and are having a hard time figuring out how to get started, a good place to begin may be to simply remind yourself of what you liked to do when you were younger, then, modify it to what you can currently do now. The joy, fun, and self- expression is still there, it’s just showing up a bit differently!

Speaking of self-expression, what creative outlet have you been meaning to pick back up again? Dancing? Painting? Learning a musical instrument? Photography? A cooking class? The list is endless but I’m willing to bet that there’s something that you’ve been wanting to get back into, or even start newly. Beginning a new hobby is a great means for stress reduction, overall improvement of life satisfaction, and enhancing neuroplasticity in the brain for improved concentration, learning and memory…and it is not too late and you are not too old to get started!

Let’s have some fun and get healthy while you’re doing it…what a winning combination!
